Area Code 972

The state of Texas sure knows how to do things in big ways. Take their area codes for example. Dallas has three area codes – 214, 469, and 972. All are for that one city of Dallas.

Due to the immense growth of the Dallas – Fort Worth area, the area code 972 was assigned to the suburban areas of Dallas in March of 1997. The 214 area code was then retained for the city of Dallas proper. Each area code could still call each other without incurring any charges, but it was necessary to do because of how large the city had become. Just 16 months later, Dallas added another area code to the mix which essentially overlayed the two area codes. The 469 area code was added after the discontinuation of the 972 and 214 area code split. This was meant to give yet another number for the growing population of people. So, there could people that were literally living side by side but with different area codes.

The counties in and around the Dallas area that are served by not only area code 972 but 214 and 469 are:

  • Collin
  • Dallas
  • Denton
  • Ellis
  • Johnson
  • Kaufman
  • Navarro
  • Rockwall
  • Rowlett

Dallas is not only one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas, but they are also the ninth largest cities in the United States. Although Dallas has always been a city with a large population, it has steadily been growing. In 1980 they had only 2 million people, but by 1990, they had almost doubled it with 4 million people. The Dallas lawmakers knew they were going to have a problem on their hands if they didn't do something about the phone situation. That is why they came up with the idea of adding area code 972. They were simply running out of phone numbers to give to the thousands of people that were moving to Dallas everyday. Then they realized that it just wasn't enough. By 2000 they had expected even more people, so they prepared by adding the third and final area code of 469 to make sure they were fully covered. They were right it seems. In 2000 they had a population of over 5.2 million people, with more people moving there everyday.

Their new slogan "Live Large, Think Big" obviously refers to their phone calling situation as well. Without the addition of area code 972 and 469 there wouldn't be anyway to call friends and family or even the 10-gallon hat store down the street. In Texas, they certainly can't have something like that standing in their way.
